Some solutions are hiding under the rug

In the Beachcomber for Pearl Harbor Day the Editorial headline,“Who’s to blame?” is well-chosen because blaming the perpetuators is pointless. The question also is timely because of growing concern about Meth and the rest of that. Drug use has turned the homeless problem into a nightmare. Well, folks, we have been sweeping these problems under the rug, but now we have to go under that rug in order to find solutions. There’s a straightforward solution for the homeless and I’ll get to that. Drug use by school kids is best confronted by building a teen center/skate park  downtown. Drug pushing and addiction are collateral damage from loss of most of what was Vashon’s economy; rebuilding it is the only solution.

The homeless have got to be put to work. This is feasibly done by setting aside some land and requiring that they maintain and police it. Most of those just evicted would have been glad to cooperate with the police in shutting out the meth users. For productive work think dump. Before you unleash the usual negatives to these ideas reflect that if people are treated as human then on average they will do their best. And the county can always shut off the water.

Thank you swaneagle, for inspiring this piece.
